Canadian Coast Guard

The Westport branch of the Canadian Coast Guard is stationed at Northern Light overlooking the Bay of Fundy. In their 52 foot, self-righting Arun Class lifeboat they patrol an area equaling a 125 mile radius that stretches from the middle of the Bay of Fundy to the Hagline ( the U.S./Canadian border line ), encompassing Grand Manan and heads due south to Yarmouth.
The people who make up the Coast Guard consist of eight full time employees, with qualified spares on call. They work four people to a shift of one week on and one week off, operating on a 24/7 basis. Each year they handle approximately 100 SAR ( Search And Rescue ) incidents. All emergencies are routed through the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre ensuring timely and appropriate responses to calls of distress.
For the fishermen of Long and Brier Islands the Coast Guard is a vital safety net. The opening week of lobster season ( the last Monday in November ) is the Coast Guard's busiest time of the year and both shifts are on duty. A second boat, a Hurricane 733 rigid hull inflatable, provides additional safety on the water during this hectic, foul weather season.

Westport Community Hall

The Community Hall has an interesting history that started back in 1908 when the vessel "Aurora" was ship wrecked while on route to Boston with a load of lumber. From the cargo which washed ashore, the Odd Fellows Hall was built and was eventually turned into the present Community Hall. In the early part of the 19th century salvage from ship wrecks was just another part of the way of life on Brier Island and while a disaster for the owners and crews of these vessels, they were considered God's Special Provision by the enterprising Brier Islanders.

Westport Fire Hall

The Westport Fire Hall is manned by dedicated volunteers from the community. Training is provided through the resources of the province of Nova Scotia and equipment and buildings are maintained and upgraded through the efforts of the community. When the ambulance service was relocated to Long Island the fire department took on another important role and now provides a First Responder service to augment the provincial ambulance service.

Westport School

The first school was built in Westport in 1789. This 20-foot square building stood until it was washed away in the Ground Hog's Day storm of 1976. Private homes were used prior to this and one still stands on the former Church St. where the Anglican Church also stood. Soon after the Compulsory Education Act of 1864, a 4-room school was built and still stands. In 1962, a smaller modern school, now in use for Grades 1 to 6, went up. Older students travel to a school by ferry and bus.
